I recently came across this game Alan Wake in Official Xbox Magazine: Zombie Edition and it caught my interest for it’s great graphics.
Story: You are a best-seller author, Alan Wake, that hasnt written anything in 2 year. To get ride of his writers block and to get back is creative flows he moves to a small town called Bright Falls with his wife. One day his wife vanishes and his best-selling book about a prophecy of a world of evil minions and darkness begins to come true. “The pages of his book seem to leap off the page,” says Remedy. At first the pages of the book begin to grow each night and then the book starts to begin to rewrite its self into something more aggressive.
Gameplay: Remedy calls it a psychological action thriller that engages the player in psychological warfare. Remedy also states that its going to be a very scary game by saying “Its a step beyond the boo mentality of Doom, and its more advanced even than F.E.A.Rs jarring peaks and endless troughs. One key characteristic of the game is that it’s not a shoot-em-up like RE5 or Left 4 Dead, instead it focuss on more of the mystery at hand (finding your wife, and why this evilness is happening), but you are equip with a gun and a flashlight. Xbox Magazine calls it “Refreshing to play a game where your hopes arent loaded into a gun.” The trailer seems to show a lot of driving in the game which I thought was neat and some part’s almost looked like GTA-esc. Remedy says: "The basic idea with the free-roaming world is that we give the player goals, and then the player can go about achieving those goals in the way he chooses. Alan Wake is more tightly character-driven and story-oriented, meaning that the player’s goals and missions are closely focused around Alan Wake and his story. Also, the setting, the tone and the game being an action thriller all set it clearly apart from the GTA games."
Im very happy that its going to be free roaming so its not as going to be linear and I first though at first glance. Remedy also said there going to have tense action sequences with a lot of adventure and exploration involved. This game in my mind seems that it has characteristics from every genre all combined into one awesome looking game. The game also a reoccurring theme of light being your savior. The darkness seems to represent demons and evil. The flashlight looks like its going to be on of your key weapons/tools in the game (just a hunch though).
Final Thoughts: I cant wait for this game to come out in 2010. Looks great, the gameplay and graphics look amazing and sounds like it has a very complex twisted story that is going to have to make you think. I also like how they are not emphasizing on weapons but instead have some weapons and your main weapon is your brain. I also like how there is a day/night cycle that happens which helps set the mood. I seriously can’t wait for this game, it looks like its going to be a very scary game that will have to make me take breather between gameplay.
